Generation of Simulation Networks from NAVTEQ or OpenStreetMap Data

The fast, easy and comfortable way towards microsimulation of traffic and traffic light control!

VS-SimGen is a tool automatically generates microsimulation networks from NAVTEQ- or OpenStreetMap (OSM) data. For this, most of the information the data sources lack are completed by means of intelligent algorithms as realistic as possible.



The program comprises the following main features:

1. Import of NAVTEQ (Shape files „Extended Lane“) or OpenStreetMap (Internet or file). OSM is free of charge (but at present not as detailed as NAVTEQ). NAVTEQ files can be purchased per city.

2. Export of any subset of the imported network to VISSIM (Version 5.4). Reconstruction of the VISSIM network geometry as realistic as possible. The export is based on the use of VIS-SIM templates.

3.Later insertion of existing VISSIM intersections into the generated VISSIM network. Complete, executable VISSIM intersections (with detectors, signal groups, etc.) from the portfolio can be taken over automatically into the larger generated VISSIM network with a single mouse click.

Processing Steps

Structure and flow of processing are illustrated in the figure below on this page.

On top of an OSM map the area to import is defined by means of a rectangle. The imported data is then basis for one or several exports to the VISSIM INP format (from VISSIM version 5.4).

The export is based on predefined VISSIM templates that contain general definitions that are needed as an export context (e.g. VEHICLETYPE, BEHAVIOURTYPE, etc.). It is possible to export any subset of the imported network to VISSIM. Special editor functions are offered here to support the selection (e.g. road type filters).

The following VISSIM objects are generated automatically and related to each other:

Roads, Lanes Inclusive generation of opposite direction and intelligent estimation of lane configuration (if not available explicitly).
Connectors Inclusive determination of the optimal geometry according to speed limits, change of lane numbers on motorways.
Desired Speed Decisions They are determined according to the explicitly given speed limits and the link classification.
Conflict Areas, Stop signs Determination of conflict areas and stop signs by analyzing the road geometry and explicitly defined data: link classes, right-of-way information, etc.
Bridges Automatic construction of VISSIM bridges according to the altitude data of the NAVTEQ / OSM links.

As a rule, the data sources (NAVTEQ, OSM) do not contain all details of the road geometry. Therefore, by means of complex algorithms the missing information is being reconstructed (e.g. intersection topology).


 By means of this feature generated VISSIM networks can be quickly and comfortably extended by traffic control infrastructure components.
