Call for more control in ITS

Dear researchers, Ph.D. students, master students, and bachelor students,

when we look at conference papers, it seems to be common practice when doing ITS traffic projects to do a lot of statistics by simulations with

  • different signal timings,
  • different vehicle flows and turning rates,
  • different driving behavior,
  • and whatever can be varied.

Then the results are discussed and the best parameters are suggested.

This is good to be done, at the analysis and design phase. But statistical signal timing is not the whole truth in ITS systems. There is more that can be done. There is control, there is traffic-actuation. The “I” in ITS stands for intelligent. Intelligence is not only about information and planning, intelligence is also about

  • keeping systems stable,
  • responding to actual measurements,
  • closing the feedback loop,
  • making sure systems continue to meet objective criteria under operation.

Why don’t you consider adding some control to your system?

And maybe all of a sudden your approach that

  • seem difficult to be calibrated into static signal plans,
  • seems to be sensitive to flow changes,

may become a great and stable solution?
