THE OBJECT-ORIENTED PLANNING AND DEVELOPMENT USER
INTERFACE FOR VS-PLUS The graphic-oriented tool VS-WorkSuite is used to define the control scheme for an intersection. Definition and documentation is carried out by a set of standard parameters. Software development skill are not required, only knowledge in traffic control. The option VS-Freestyle has been developed and added to the VS-WorkSuite tool for special applications. With the this programming panel, the user can program specific control logic element using a flow chart notation. Parameters and program parts are linked with the VS-PLUS control environment. The resulting control scheme (logic and timing plan) can be tested with simulation runs using a simulation tool like VISSIM, Paramics or AIMSUN. Finally, the control scheme can be downloaded to the intersection controller. VS-WorkSuite has open XML file interfaces to import data generated by other traffic engineering software. Through these interfaces, basic data, such as |
signal group information, clearance time
matrices, offset time matrices and signal timing diagrams can be exchanged easily with
other systems. VS-WorkSuite keeps track of the various VS-PLUS versions. Depending on the type of intersection controller used, a wizard leads the traffic engineer through the parameter input process. Context-sensitive help is available at all points. VS-PLUS control schemes can be edited directly without any development environment. They can also be modified directly at the intersection controller or re-imported into VS-WorkSuite for documentation and version control purposes. When testing a VS-PLUS control scheme with a simulation model, the control parameters can be modified on-line. During the simulation, the VS-WorkSuite on-line Monitor can visualize the main control parameters on the screen. Observation of the signal changes allows an efficient optimization of control logic and timing plan. |
